Back to On Whitney's Pond...
First Pond Construction
This page was not revised from when I did it
originally. So most all of this is really past tense..I didn't want to
take the time to change it to sounding like that!

This was the previous site of our strawbale barn. There is a bit of clutter left over from it's demise. Ok there is always some clutter around here. The pond will be the bright spot in the clutter
| Here is Dan starting 8/5/04. I left that green bin in the picture so there is some perspective..until it was buried =:> You can see it in the first picture over the top of the 4 wheeler fender.... | ![]() |

I could only sit on the sidelines, and take pictures. I had hoped to do some of this work myself, but a wrist fractured in 7 places in June kind of took care of that. I could barely take the pictures yet with my right hand at this point. I just stood, watched, and from what hubby said..grinnned!!

I wanted a 5 foot deep pond..well we knew we would have to berm the dirt to get that far. Yup...here is the ROCK bottom and it was a big one! We even had a neighbor come over with a BIG backhoe (It could reach from one end of the pond hole to the other..and it's 26' long!) and he got maybe 4-6 more inches in spots..but he didn't budge that rock!
| You can see (or maybe you can't!) that I've started forming the edge around the pond here | ![]() |
||||||

That is an 8 foot ladder if I remember right...
| Some rocks are too big for a little John Deere tractor... | ![]() |
||||||

There had been dirt moved since the mountain blew but the ash line was still very evident
| Another view of THE rock. | ![]() |

I was worried about having rocks to landscape around the pond....ummm I won't need to buy any! We have gotten a bunch more out of one of our fields that we took the orchard off of and in plowing it got lots more rocks to use!
| Fitting the bottoms drains. Hubby wasn't in the mood to use the pick to dig holes to put it under the liner. Sometimes yah just don't argue with the help =:> The bottoms drains go into the settlement tank | ![]() |
||||||

We just carpeted and put the liner in right over that big rock. Not much else we could do!
| We used a neighbors abandoned apple storage room to seam the liner
in. We seamed the liner in roughly this shape since the pond shape
is kind of an "L" The extra "foot" on the L is
an area we will try plants in. Maybe later will put a rock wall to
keep out the koi if necessary, even making it into a rock bridge??
That's next years project..or the year after lol

Cutting the liner..scary you know?
| We taped and caulked the seam where we joined the liner | ![]() |
||||||

The liner went in on a day I was not home, so no pictures of that. Here we are starting to fill the pond. This is looking east to west
| This was at roughly 5,700 gallons. the "foot" is the shallow area for plants. This is looking west to east! | ![]() |

Here is east to west again. The rabbit barn is in the background. Gallonage is around 10,000. A bit bigger than the original 5,000 or so first envisioned! I like this size better! It's 26ft long in this view, the width is mostly 12' except at the other end where the "toe" of the L is. That is about 6x8 and 1.5 feet deep. The average depth of the main part of the pond is about 4.25..remember the rock? =:> Most of the pond is 4.5 |
