Second Pond Construction

Back to On Whitney's Pond...

Which if the truth is known is really the same pond... just totally re-done.  The advantage I see to the pond having leaked the first winter is it DID give me an opportunity to re-do the pond armed with a LOT more knowledge than when we did the first one.  Koiphen.com is an excellent web page/forum with many knowledgeable koi keepers, koi judges, koi nuts (called Koi Kichi..sounds MUCH better).

We tore out the first liner.  It was 20mil pvc which I tried to seam...hence the leak.  So this time I bought 40 mil rubber liner all one piece.  Should have bought that in the first place..it was where I tried to cut costs that didn't work.

I hadn't put a cement collar around the top of the pond and I wanted to do that this time... hmm while we are doing that, lets put a few courses of blocks on top and make the pond DEEPER!!

Footer was poured and blocks were laid.

Rockie and Rebecca working on the blocks.

Added a savio skimmer to the pond as well.

We put in 2 bottom drains with air domes on them.  The current created by them will help draw the junk and gunk to the bottom drains.  Each drain has it's own separate Spirex 500 gallon settlement tank.

This was something hubby Dan made with a bottom drain and airdome purchased from www.KoiVillage.com  Gene Winstead is a very knowledgeable guy and very helpful

Here is Dan connecting up the bottom drain pipes

Here is one of the spirex tanks.

Tanks set in place.  These will drain into a manmade swamp kind of pond

Water going in!

Here you can see one of the airdomes working..

Somewhere I have pictures of the finished pond...somewhere.  Will find and post them when I can.

Total gallonage is 13,500 including the 2 Spirex filters.  When full it is 5-6 feet deep. More filtration, waterfalls etc will be added spring of 2006..when the pond isn't under ice.

This picture was taken early December 2005, it was about 10 degrees when it was taken.  The ice was probably thick enough to walk on.  Pond water temperature is being watched via a temperature probe in the pond that signals into the house.  Pond water temperatures are 38-39 degrees.

The pond level was dropped this year so we could drain the skimmer.
